  • Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory - "The Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (PMEL) carries out interdisciplinary scientific investigations in oceanography and atmospheric science."

  • Pacific Southwest Region Fire and Aviation Management - "This site is produced by the Public Affairs and Communication Office of the United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service, Pacific Southwest Region." Detailed information on current fires including maps.

  • Paleobiology Database - "The Paleobiology Database is a public resource for the scientific community. It has been organized and operated by a multi-disciplinary, multi-institutional group of paleobiological researchers. Its purpose is to provide global, collection-based occurrence and taxonomic data for marine and terrestrial animals and plants of any geological age, as well as web-based software for statistical analysis of the data. The project's wider, long-term goal is to encourage collaborative efforts to answer large-scale paleobiological questions by developing a useful database infrastructure and bringing together large data sets."

  • Patterns of Global Terrorism - From the U.S. Department of State, yearly reports, from 1996 to 2003.

  • PBS TeacherSource - Searchable or browse using broad disciplines. Can limit by grade groups. Somewhat structured plans include introduction, objectives, and standards.

  • Peabody Museum of Natural History at Yale University - "There are more than eleven million specimens and objects held by the Museum’s curatorial divisions, less than one percent of which can be displayed to the public at any given time. On the Museum’s website, the collections are arranged by scientific discipline: detailed information on specific holdings is given on each collection’s home page."

  • Penn Library Electronic Journals - The University of Pennsylvania Libraries offer access by title or broad subject area to a mixed collection of scholarly journals and ordinary magazines.

  • Penn World Table - Search for detailed economic statistics on the country of your choice. Covers the years 1950 - 2000.

  • Periodic Table - WebElements - The most complete table of elements. Contains links to data from Hydrogen, element 1 to Ununoctium, element 118, discovered in 1999, the heaviest element.

  • Perry-Castaneda Library Map Collection - From the University of Texas-Austin, this is the best single map site on the web. Features general world maps, U.S. maps, and historical maps, plus a selection of links to other good map sites.

  • Perspectives in American Literature - Background notes on major periods in American literature, plus bibliographies on major authors, and study questions.

  • Petfinder - Petfinder is "...is an on-line, searchable database of over 100,000 animals that need homes from over 5,000 animal shelters and adoption organizations across the USA and Canada. Organizations maintain their own home pages and available pet database." Use the search feature to find local pets, shelters, and rescue groups.

  • Pew Research Center for the People and the Press - The Pew Research Center conducts public opinion surveys and research about perceptions of news media and journalism.

  • Philosopher's Magazine - Not a scholarly source, but offering news and opinion on philosophy topics.

  • Philosophy Pages - Includes a philosophy dictionary, a study guide, discussions of major philsophers, a timeline, plus sections on the history of philosophy and on logic.

  • Phrase Finder - Investigates the origins of unusual phrases.

  • Physics 2000 - An informative and fun introduction to various aspects of physics using java applets which allow learning through interaction. Some of the applets will be quite slow to load with a slower modem. From the Chemistry and Physics Department at the University of Colorado at Boulder.

  • PhysicsWeb: Physics Around the World (PAW) - Comprehensive annotated index to on-line physics resources.

  • Pics4Learning - Pics4Learning is a copyright-friendly image library for teachers and students. The "Pics4Learning collection consists of thousands of images that have been donated by students, teachers, and amateur photographers."

  • PLANTS Database - National in scope, this database done by the U.S. Department of Agriculture allows you to search for plant information by common or scientific names. Don't miss other features of this site under the "Topics," "Gallery," "Links," and "Tools" links.

  • Plants of the Coastal Sage Scrub and Chaparral on the CSUSB campus - A photo gallery of both native and introduced species growing on the CSUSB campus done by Dr. Kimberlyn Williams. Don't miss the links to further sites with local plant information.

  • Playbill - This site covers primarily the American and English theater community and offers a wide array of resorces from current listings and tickets to theater history to a list of Internet resources.

  • Poetry Portal - "Poetry Portal is a directory of worldwide poetry online, a simple-to-use and well-nigh comprehensive overview of the fascinating variety of literary productions on the Internet." Click on "Poetry Online" and scroll down to find a list of potential online criticism sources.

  • Population Index - The Population Index allows searching for bibliographic citations to books, journal articles, and other materials on world population topics.

  • Population Reference Bureau - "PRB's website offers full text of all PRB publications, including our respected Population Bulletins and Web-exclusive data and analysis on world issues ranging from aging to family planning. Our Center for Public Information on Population Research puts new population research findings into context for journalists and policymakers."

  • Poynter Online - The Poynter Institute is a school for journalists, future journalists, and teachers of journalists. Poynter Online offers free news and analysis of the American news media.

  • Poynter.org: Covering the Attack - Archive of pages from the Poynter Institute, a school for journalism. Focus is on how the media covered September 11 events. Features an archive of newspaper front pages from the day of the attack and the day after.

  • Prehistoric Fiction - Prehistoric fiction is a genre of literature which may be defined as "A novel set in prehistoric times, or in which the principal characters are members of a prehistoric society." This extremely thorough site includes discussions of the history of prehistoric fiction, publishing trends, and major authors in addition to an extensive, annotated list of books which may be viewed by publication date, author, or title.

  • Presidential addresses - Texts of speeches by American presidents from Washington to the present.

  • ProCon.org: Pros and Cons of Controversial Issues - ProCon.org is a nonpartisan, independent, and nonprofit corporation whose purpose is to inform the public about controversial issues using facts, news, and hundreds of diverse opinions in a pro-con format.

  • Project Gutenberg - Project Gutenberg is dedicated to making public domain texts easily accessible to everyone. Their extensive list includes fiction, non-fiction, and poetry. You can search by author or title.

  • Project Themes - Small collection of education links divided by language arts, math, social studies, science, and art. From Boston College Libraries, School of Education.

  • Propaganda Analysis - An interesting guide to the techniques of propaganda. Includes a brief bibliography and clips from propaganda films (requires RealPlayer).

  • Psychology of Religion Page - Resources relating to the psychological study of religion, includes links to teaching resources.

  • Psychology Virtual Library - PVL is an extremely well organized directory of psychology web sites. It's a part of the WWW Virtual Library and originates from the University of Florida. Of particular interest is the section "Journals (Electronic and Print)," which provides links to many, many scholarly journals. Other favorite sections include "History of Psychology" and "What's New in Psychology Sites."

  • Public and Private Laws - Search for "Public Laws" or "Statutes at Large." Available from 104th Congress (1995-96) to the present.
