  • Core List of Astronomy Books - "These Core Lists of books in astronomy are intended to assist librarians and collection development librarians in building astrophysics collections.   • A Celebration of Women Writers - "The Celebration of Women Writers recognizes the contributions of women writers throughout history. Women have written almost every imaginable type of work: novels, poems, letters, biographies, travel books, religious commentaries, histories, economic and scientific works. Our goal is to promote awareness of the breadth and variety of women's writing." Search by name, date, country, or ethnicity to find a text.

  • A Century of Physics - A timeline (1896-1995) of significant events in the development of physics. Also listed alphabetically, indexed by category (Cosmic, Human, Atomic, Living World, Technology, and Art) and searchable by keyword.

  • A Guide for Writing Research Papers - Prepared by the Humanities Department and the Arthur C. Banks, Jr., Library at Capital Community Technical College in Hartford, Connecticut, this guide is based on the Modern Language Association (MLA) documentation. There is a clickable button that leads to another, much shorter one based on the recommendations of the American Psychological Association (APA). Please note that while these guides are useful for answering common questions, they are not substitutes for the MLA and APA style manuals.

  • ABU Bibliotheque : French Classics in Literature and Philosophy - French public domain texts prepared by the Association des Bibliophiles Universels (ABU). Numerous authors (mostly French) from all time periods.

  • Academic Info: English Studies - Brief selection of resources relating to the English language, ESL, British literature, and American literature.

  • Academic Info: Film Studies - Directory of film sites with a scholarly focus; focus is European. Includes sections on world film, women and film, film history, and academic departments.

  • Ad Access - Free access to more than 7,000 magazine and newspaper ads from the years 1911-1955. Search by keyword or browse categories.

  • Ad Council - The Ad Council produces "public service announcements" or PSA's. Clips of some current TV PSA's are available free at the site, along with some well-known historical PSA's.

  • adam.com Encyclopedia Disease Reference - Basic information on many diseases. Also available are sections on injury, nutrition, poison, surgery, symptoms, and tests. Part of MEDLINE Plus.

  • Adflip - Archive of notable ads which appeared in print magazines. Some items are free, but requires a fee for access to the complete archive.

  • Administration of Justice Research Guide - This guide from George Mason University provides links to criminal justice-related indexes, topical guides, statistics, legal resources, law enforcement, organizations, and more.

  • Adult Education ESL Teacher's Guide - A module for training beginning ESL teachers. Includes beginning and intermediate activities and how to implement them in the classroom.

  • Advertising Age - The free portion of this well-known magazine's web site offers occasional clips of current TV ads, as well as opinion and analysis. (Not all material at the site is free.)

  • AdWeek "Best Spots" - AdWeek's best spots offers one or two free videos of current notable TV ads. Descriptions and one screen capture are provided for all older spots. (Copies can be ordered for a fee.)

  • Africa Research Central - Africa Research Central is your gateway to the archives, libraries, and museums with important collections of African primary sources. The focus is on repositories in Africa, but there are also links to the web sites of institutions in both Europe and North America.

  • African American Women Writers of the 19th Century - A collection of texts from the Schomburg Library. Includes poetry, essays, fiction, and autobiography. No background information about the authors or their works is provided.

  • African-American Writers: E-texts - Collection of links to online versions of works by famous African American authors, plus links to other kinds of web sites relating to each author.

  • AfriGeneas - Contains resources for African-American genealogy.

  • Afro-Louisiana History and Genealogy 1719-1820 - Searchable database of over 100,000 slave records for Louisiana, covering 1719-1820.

  • After Sept. 11: Perspectives from the Social Sciences - Essays from noted scholars consider such topics as terrorism and democracy, globalization, fundamentalism, and the aftermath of Sept. 11. Designed as a resource for college instructors.

  • AgEcon Search: Research in Agricultural and Applied Economics - Research in Agricultural and Applied Economics is a World Wide Web site developed and maintained at the University of Minnesota by Magrath Library and the Department of Applied Economics.AgEcon Search collects, indexes, and electronically distributes full text copies of scholarly research in the broadly defined field of agricultural economics including sub disciplines such as agribusiness, food supply, natural resource economics, environmental economics, policy issues, agricultural trade, and economic development.

  • Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry - Extensive, searchable, resource for toxic substances and hazardous wastes.

  • AgNIC: Agriculture Network Information Center - "AgNIC is a guide to quality agricultural information on the Internet as selected by the National Agricultural Library, Land-Grant Universities, and other institutions." from the Web site. Topic coverage is quite broad and includes food and human nutrition, entomology, sociology, engineering, and environmental science among others.

  • AGRICOLA (AGRICultural OnLine Access) - Catalog and index to the collections of the National Agricultural Library, as well as a primary public source for world-wide access to agricultural information. The database covers materials in all formats and periods, including printed works from as far back as the 15th century.

  • AGRIS - "AGRIS, the international information system for the agricultural sciences and technology, was created by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in 1974. The system collects bibliographic references (to date, about 3 million) to either conventional (journal articles, books) or non-conventional materials (sometimes called "grey literature" e.g. theses, reports, etc.), not available through ordinary commercial channels.   • All Music Guide - Search by artist, album, song, style, or label to find information on popular music and musicians.

  • America Becomes Urban - An electronic resource of: University of California Press.

  • American Association of Poison Control Centers - Directory of the poison control centers in the United States listed by state and alphabetically. The alphabetical directory also includes centers for Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and Puerto Rico. The site also includes an annotated list of links to related sites, the Annual Reports of the Toxic Exposure Surveillance System (TESS) in PDF format, educational materials on poisons, and tips for poison prevention.

  • American Society for Engineering Education - Founded in 1893, the American Society for Engineering Education is a nonprofit organization of individuals and institutions committed to furthering education in engineering and engineering technology.

  • ASHA: American Speech-Language-Hearing Association - ASHA is the professional, scientific, and credentialing association for speech-language pathologists, audiologists, and speech, language, and hearing scientists in the United States and internationally. This site provides information on certification, continuing education, and jobs in the field, as well as advocacy opportunities, science and research, and treatment outcomes.

  • Asian Film Connection - From USC, this site features information on Chinese, Japanese, and Indian films. Currently few films are covered and information is incomplete, but future additions are promised. Some educational material, such as class syllabi, is included.

  • Benevolent Animal Rescue Committee - Based in Mentone. "BARC's mission is to control the dog and cat population by funding spay and neuter procedures and by altering all animals that we rescue. These animals include strays, pets that are turned our to us by their owners and some that we rescue for city and county shelters. Our primary funding goes to limited income pet owners to help defray the cost of spay and neuter procedures. Our benevolent work includes, providing funds for emergency medical care of dogs and cats, providing foster housing for rescued animals and hosting adoption shows in order to place spayed and neutered cats and dogs with their new owners."

  • Berkeley's Education-Psychology Library - Internet Resources on Education and Psychology by UC Berkeley library.

  • Best Friends Animal Sanctuary - Kanab, Utah boasts "...the nation's largest sanctuary for abused and abandoned cats and dogs and other animals. They come here from all over the country and there are never fewer than 1,800 here on any given day. Most of them just need a few weeks of special care before they can go on to good new homes. Others, who are older or sicker or have suffered extreme trauma, find a special home at the sanctuary for the rest of their lives."   • Best Information on the Net - A library-produced guide for college students. Offers selected web sites arranged by major and by hot paper topics.

  • Best Places to Live - Money ranks 300 United States metropolitan areas as places to live. The database of social indicators upon which the ratings are based contains statistical data on 63 factors for each metropolitan area. These factors cover topics of weather, economy, housing, health, education, crime, transportation, leisure, arts and culture. In addition to the Best Places ratings, Money offers a Cost of Living Comparator. Select two cities and find the difference in the cost of living between the two cities.

This site is an excellent educational tool on the Federal Reserve and is simple to use. There are no flashy graphics or complicated navigational tools, only useful links to a variety of Federal Reserve related information including "Reports to the Congress," "Testimony and Speeches," and the "Community Reinvestment Act." Those wishing to gain a better understanding of interest rates and banking principals will be interested in this site.

  • North American Fossil Mammal Systematics Database - "This is a personal database compiled by John Alroy in the course of his research.   • North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) - The North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) is replacing the existing Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) system. NAICS makes substantial structural improvements and identifies over 350 new industries. At the same time, it causes breaks in time series far more profound than any prior revision of the SIC system. The 1997 Economic Census presents a unique opportunity to show the interrelationships between the old and new classification systems.

  • Search Edgar Databases - includes Mutual Funds - The Securities and Exchange Commission offers several services to visitors of its web site. This portion of the web site prints Mutual Funds Activity Reports, based on time parameter, dating back to January 1, 1994. This service requires prior knowledge of Securities and Exchange Commission reports (i.e. 13G, 13D, NSAR) and the name of the specific funds to search. Some reports are privacy enhanced and cannot be read.
